How to make a business website: a step-by-step guide for beginners
The whole process in plain language: plan your pages, pick a domain and hosting, install WordPress, add your content and go live.
You don't need to know code to build a good business website. You need a plan, about a weekend, and the right tools. Here is the whole process in six steps.
1. Plan your pages
Most small business websites need only five pages:
- Home: what you do, who it's for, and how to contact you
- Services (or Products): what you offer, with prices if you can
- About: who you are and why people can trust you
- Reviews or Work: proof from real customers
- Contact: phone, WhatsApp, email, address and a short form
Write the main text for each page in a simple document first. AI tools like ChatGPT can help: describe your business and ask for a first draft of each page, then edit it in your own words.
2. Choose a domain name
Your domain is your address online, like yourbusiness.com. Keep it short, easy to spell and close to your business name. Use .com or your country's ending (.pk, .nl, .co.uk) if your customers are local.
3. Get hosting
Hosting is the computer that shows your website to visitors. For a small business, a basic shared hosting plan is enough. Make sure it includes a free SSL certificate (the padlock), backups and one-click WordPress install. See the hosting checklist.
4. Install WordPress and a theme
Most hosts install WordPress in one click from their control panel. Then choose a fast, well-supported theme such as Astra or Kadence, and a page builder like Elementor if you want drag-and-drop editing.
Only install themes and plugins from WordPress.org or the official developer.
5. Add your content
- Create the five pages from step 1 and paste in your text.
- Add real photos of your work, team or shop. They build more trust than stock photos.
- Add a WhatsApp button and a simple contact form so people can reach you in one tap. Our WhatsApp link generator makes the link for you.
6. Launch and get found
- Check every page on your phone.
- Set up a business email like info@yourbusiness.com.
- Create a free Google Business Profile so you show up on Google Maps.
- Run a free website audit to catch missing titles and descriptions.
How long does it take?
A simple five-page site usually takes a weekend for a first-timer. The parts that take longest are writing the text and finding good photos, so start with those.
