What is an SSL certificate?

An SSL certificate lets your website load over https:// and shows the padlock in the browser. Without a valid one, Chrome and Safari warn visitors that your site is “Not secure”, and many leave straight away.

How to get a free SSL certificate

  • cPanel hosting: open SSL/TLS Status and click Run AutoSSL. Most hosts include it free.
  • Check the domain points to your hosting: AutoSSL only works when it does.
  • Redirect to https:// so every visitor gets the secure version.

Certificates from Let's Encrypt and AutoSSL last about 90 days and renew automatically. If yours shows fewer than 14 days left and isn't renewing, check your hosting's SSL page.

Questions about the SSL Checker

Why does Chrome say my website is "Not secure"?

Your site has no valid SSL certificate, it has expired, or it does not cover the address people type (for example www). The checker shows which one.

How do I get a free SSL certificate?

Most cPanel hosting includes AutoSSL from Let's Encrypt or Sectigo. Open SSL/TLS Status in cPanel and click Run AutoSSL. Your domain must point to that hosting.

How often do SSL certificates expire?

Free certificates last about 90 days and renew themselves. If yours shows fewer than 14 days left, check that automatic renewal is working.
